At Via Nova, we use a comprehensive diagnostic approach to accurately identify the underlying causes of complaints such as reduced performance or other internal health issues. Some of these examinations can be performed on-site.
At Via Nova, we perform extensive cardiac evaluations using echocardiography (heart ultrasound) and electrocardiography (ECG), both at rest and during exercise. These tests help determine whether the heart may be contributing to performance issues.
e also assess whether it is safe to ride a horse with a heart murmur or arrhythmia, and how these conditions may affect athletic performance, including in the context of pre-purchase examinations.
Symptoms such as coughing, nasal discharge, nosebleeds, rapid or difficult breathing, or abnormal respiratory sounds during exercise require thorough evaluation. We examine the upper airways, including the nasal passages, guttural pouches, throat, vocal cords/larynx, trachea, and lungs using exercise testing, blood tests, endoscopy, ultrasound, and radiography.
To further clarify the cause of respiratory problems, additional diagnostics such as tracheal aspiration or bronchoalveolar lavage may be performed.
If a horse produces abnormal sounds during exercise that are not detected with a resting endoscopy, a dynamic (exercise) endoscopy can provide more information.
Signs such as weight loss, reduced performance, restlessness under saddle, behavioral changes, recurrent colic, loose feces, or suspected gastric ulcers prompt thorough evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract. This may include gastroscopy (stomach endoscopy), ultrasound, absorption tests, intestinal biopsies, rectal examination, abdominocentesis, and fecal analysis to accurately identify the underlying cause.
Symptoms such as excessive drinking and urination, difficulty or pain when urinating, cloudy or bloody urine, weight loss, decreased appetite, dull coat, and mild colic-like signs may indicate liver, kidney, or bladder problems.
We perform extensive blood and urine tests, complemented by ultrasound and, if necessary, endoscopy (cystoscopy). Ultrasound-guided biopsies may also be performed to obtain a precise diagnosis.
Reduced performance can also result from muscle problems, including metabolic disorders or muscle fatigue. Further evaluation is indicated for muscle atrophy, weakness, or frequent lying down. We conduct a thorough assessment including physical examination, blood tests, exercise testing, and, if necessary, muscle biopsies.
Via Nova is equipped with modern laboratory facilities for extensive blood and urine analysis. These tests are carefully evaluated to identify a wide range of conditions, from metabolic disorders to infections.
Via Nova has the capabilities to diagnose a variety of neurological conditions, including ataxia, headshaking, head tilt, central nervous system signs (head pressing, circling, behavioral or attitude changes), epilepsy, and narcolepsy.
Each case involves a thorough neurological examination followed by specific diagnostics such as radiography, endoscopy, blood tests, CT scan, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis.
